Healthcare
Guatemala

Overview
Access to basic healthcare remains one of the most pressing challenges facing rural communities across Guatemala. Every day, families face barriers to receiving essential medical care due to limited resources, lack of health education, and geographic isolation. These challenges impact overall well-being, education, and long-term development. While the need is significant, meaningful change begins with small, consistent efforts. By working together, we can help expand access to care and support healthier communities.
A Program of Purpose and Cultural Immersion
Healthcare disparities don’t just affect individuals—they have lasting effects on entire communities. Through our partnership with the Ministry of Health of Guatemala, participants support local clinics, organize health fairs, and work in schools to teach topics such as hygiene, nutrition, and maternal health. These initiatives help promote prevention and long-term well-being.
Beyond community health work, participants experience Guatemala’s rich culture and natural beauty. Activities may include visiting Lake Atitlán, exploring local markets filled with handwoven textiles and fresh produce, and participating in traditional experiences like weaving and chocolate-making. This balance of service and cultural immersion creates a meaningful and memorable experience.

Why It Matters
Access to healthcare is essential for individuals and communities to thrive. When families receive basic screenings, education, and preventive care, they are better equipped to maintain their health and improve their quality of life. Addressing these needs helps reduce long-term health risks, supports child development, and strengthens community resilience. This work goes beyond immediate support—it helps build a foundation for sustainable, community-driven health improvements.
How You Can Help
You can be part of this effort by contributing your time, skills, and willingness to learn. Participants gain hands-on experience by supporting community health initiatives and assisting with clinical services such as:
Screening for high blood pressure
Screening for diabetes
Measuring vital signs (temperature, oxygen levels, heart rate, respiration)
Assessing nutrition through body mass index
Conducting basic vision exams
In addition, participants receive language training in Spanish or Mayan languages and live with host families in villages near Quetzaltenango. Living with a host family creates an ideal environment to practice language skills while experiencing daily life and culture in Guatemala.
Every effort contributes to lasting impact and meaningful change.
